Nokia hard-core supporters can be numbered in millions, but the number of those exactly know about what video/audio formats their phone supports maybe much smaller. To get a clear idea of types of formats different mobile may support, I’d like to give a general introduction.

AVI, RMVB,WMV, are proper for smart phones with memory card and operating system. Their superiority: high audio quality, inferiority: large file volume;

MP4 is suitable for all mobiles, especially for those with memory card, it enables high definition and the file is medium sized;

3GP is also fit for all mobiles, particularly for those with small memory, and its merit is small size.

Many people may have a misunderstanding about the quality of 3GP, and deem it very poor. Nevertheless it is not the case at all. Many factors may affect the quality of a video, such as the quality of its source file, the parameters set as is converted, etc. The main reason why many files in 3GP format have low audio quality is that the audio is set as ‘sound’ rather than ‘stereo AAC’. Nokia’s audio/video converter, as a particular example, has no AAC at all, and thanks to the large portion of people using Nokia, a bad perception of 3GP is not incomprehensible. Then why is 3GP universally used in video-enabled mobiles ? The most outstanding strongpoint of 3GP is its being able to be compressed to a file with very small volume, but at the cost of degraded video quality.

You should bare this in mind that the quality of a video is in direct ratio with the size of the video file. Here is an example, if you convert a 4-minute MTV clip into a 3GP video, as the audio parameter is set as ‘sound’, the resulted file is about 3M,or even smaller( if you set the audio parameter even lower).But if otherwise, the video is MPEG-4,and the audio is AAC-96K,then the file is around about 7M,or even larger. That is to say the higher the audio/video parameter is set, the better quality the video will end in, and of course in a larger file size.

What formats your phone supports is contingent on the capabilities of the mobile you choose in light of your demands. And if anyway you want to play other formatted videos or audios on your dear phone, you have to do some conversion work and the tool you choose will affect a lot the resulted video quality and the amount of chore you have to endure.
