RTCW was made in the old style of level and game design you had nice sized levels with enough nooks and and hidden stuff as well as descent weapon design even tho it was a bit stale, The ending was so so heck the story was so so but in all its passable or above average in my book (6 out of 10) Doom 3(5 out of 10) and Q4(4 out of 10) are mediocre at tis best Q4 did not do its best to evolve from Q2 and Q3 and would up a bastard child of them
Doom 3's story is alright however the cramped bland levels and survival horror theme onto a graphic centered game just destroyed it for me, wheres the adventure class level design wheres the maze like levels bah! what fun is a mindless gun & run in the dark non the elss.....
quake 4 suffers from the same problem alhto its not as dark its still top heavy and the game play is shallow.
Starting off the main diffrances Quake 2 had a item belt where you can store things like grandees(that can be used as hand grandees) health packs and later on energy shileds, quake 4 has non of this nor dose it have the Hub level design ,it also has gun and run level design lacking any real depth to explore or find your way threw a level the bland level design is bad enough but they seem to have enjoyed the bland realistic weapons so much they kept them for the final game
The weapons are simi realistic knock off of quake weaponry having slight upgrades every few levels but dose not help in the over all fun factor of the game,if these weapons were less realistic and had full alternate fire to add to gameplay it would have been much more fun to play.
its what you call a "safe" sequel soemthing easy to market and produce even with all that it didn't sell well, the only reason Doom 3 sold as well as it did was because of marketing/branding.
This mediocre trash might be good for todays gamers but I refuse to put up with it and will grind in my stinky opinion of it every chance I get :P
BTW I take my insane FPS/gamer fanboyisim to the max
HL2 8: (level design,AI and dialog saved it from average)
Sin eps:4
FEAR: 8 (repetitive gameplay can wear on you)
UT03: 4 (watered down and minus a point for the removal of UT RL bring back the 8ball already)
UT04: 6 (same problem as 03 the vehicles are nice but this is more a expansion)
Unreal 2: 5 (halo clone comes to mind, weak level design and other issues just put nails in tis coffin)
pariah: 3 (simplistic level design and odd weapons hurt it more than the story)
Halo PC: 8 (a fun well polished game unlike the 6 on the Xbox)
Halo 2:Didnt fix the odd aim system and other glitches wear the game down a 6, the PC version should be fun and a solid 8 even with the vista only nonsense.
Darkwatch PS2:7 fun, controls could be better and have button mapping but its a solid game.
Time Splitters: genrealy falls into a 7 because you have complete control over remapping out your controls this adds to being able to have fun when you play the games
The last 9's I played was Half life 1 and Clive bakers undying and Turok 2 (T 1:7 T 3:7),System shock 2 is another great classic(entropy off code FTW!)
BTW I drool for bioshock :P
and when I get the limited edition and it fails my gamer nazi heart will break..and probably be more whiny :P
Let me say it again I grind in the fact they spend so much moeny on look but not enough on weapons much less levels.
